Why?

"It is a perfect moment, peaceful and life-enhancing, after a chaotic day that has had me trying to do several things at once, none of them particularly well.  I am determined to rescue the day.  Sometimes making something to eat can do that."  Nigel Slater

How this came to be

Before we went on holiday this year (2016) I went to Doncaster because Dymock’s had informed me that I needed to spend my bonus points by that day, so I went to see what I could find.  Couldn’t find a novel, so inevitably went to the cooking section where I purchased a book on leftovers by the River Cottage guy, but I was also tempted by Nigel Slater’s Kitchen Diaries volume 3.  And indeed I may go back and get it.  But as I lay in bed not sleeping that night, I also thought, well maybe I should do one of my own.  His book seemed to be a mixture of recipes, diary and musings on various food related items, and I thought I could do that.  By hand - probably a better thing to do - or digital because that’s the way we are all going and I guess it’s easier to assemble pictures?

So I started it using iBooks Author.  Wrote a couple of pages and gave up because I was spending too much time looking for pictures.  I decided to go with my initial instinct and just write something by hand - and I did keep that up until we went away but really it was a bit boring and not illustrated - that really was too hard.  Now if I could draw ...

So I started again in iBooks Author and it was quite satisfying and fun, but David tells me I should do something I can share with the interested.  (Who are they?)

So here I am having another go at a web version.  I do need some new kind of project.  I’m getting bored and finding life a bit pointless.  Besides it’s really quite fun looking for pictures.  Half the fun of doing the family history website is finding appropriate pictures.  I might learn something too.

I initially called it Food Diary, but I have changed it to Rosemary's Ramblings - not quite the same compulsion to do it every day and a bit broader.  Really it’s just musings with a food focus.  It's certainly not a well-researched academic kind of thing.  Pretty superficial really.  Food can take you in all sorts of directions though.  So here goes again.  This time it's a blog format - let's see how that goes.

"I can trace every romance of my life back to a meal. My memories are enhanced by the tender morsels had at tables across from lovers, on blankets with friends who'd eventually become more, in banquets, barbecues, and breakfasts."   Stephanie Klein

"Food is so much more than just a source of nourishment and subsistence. Its richness colors culture, history, and even literature. Its coalescing prowess brings people together into communities by creating a sense of familiarity and brotherhood. Some might go so far as to say that food is one of the major forces forging a national identity. It gives individuals a feeling of belonging that is at the core of nationalism. It serves as a hobby, a passion, a profession and sometimes even as a refuge."  Attatreya Mandal - Realm of History
