Vitamin C has moved from health to beauty

"Adored not only by the Telegraph beauty department but pretty much every skincare expert, makeup artist and celebrity out there, it’s multi-functional ability answers every skincare woe."

Victoria Hall, The Telegraph

Religiously every day we each take a vitamin C tablet. I guess it goes back to the days of Linus Pauling and his theory that large doses of vitamin C cured just about everything not just the common cold. Since then, of course, his claims have been largely disproved, but we, as well as many, keep on taking it. As you can see from the bottle we take 500mg a day. Which, it seems, is far, far more than you need.

Today we were in the supermarket and needed some Vitamin C, and so we started going through our usual process of which one is the cheapest, and lo and behold, the Cenovis ones were the only ones we could find. There were large containers of fish oil, krill oil and multivitamins abounded plus heaps of probiotic things too. Magnesium also seems to be big. But vitamin C - no. Which made me wonder whether it has gone even more out of favour.

So I googled "is vitamin c out of fashion" and up came endless articles about how good vitamin c is for your skin and how it is the latest thing in beauty. The hot item in 2017 no less. I confess I'm not much interested in beauty stuff but apparently it's a really good thing for your skin. They seem to focus on citrus - so whether just rubbing lemon juice into your skin does the trick I don't know.

I looked a little further into the health benefits and found that indeed we basically don't need to take extra vitamin C. If you are eating fruit then you get enough. 'An apple a day' and all that - literally. Moreover it seems that if you are male in particular large doses of vitamin C can lead to the development of extremely painful kidney stones. Not sure how I'm going to break this to my husband. But it might be the last bottle of vitamin C pills we buy. Before they disappear perhaps.
