A lion

This is a quickie and really nothing to do with food. I just found this amazing photograph in the AFR's super glossy travel magazine. It's actually part of an ad for Abercrombie and Kent - a superior and very expensive tour operator. The ampersand is their logo. I saw it - was struck by the face of the lion - and just wanted to share. I cannot really think of any connection to food which is not either gruesome or remote.

I suppose I could extemporise on African food but it must be such a huge subject. We do not have many African restaurants here, though they are increasing in number because of our immigrants from Sudan and Ethiopia. Oops - I have, of course, ignored completely all the North African food from Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria and Libya - well perhaps not the last three. We have plenty of Moroccan at least.

Because that's it isn't it? Africa is huge and really we know so very little about it. Not many people go to Africa on holiday - well the adventurers, and the Egyptologists, but lots of it is insecure, although I am told by friends who have been that it is wonderful. We even have one friend who comes from what was Rhodesia, now Tanzania?, but he never speaks of it.

The food is probably interesting - at least in some parts. There are their native ingredients and also all those colonial influences. Maybe I should pick one - Ethiopian perhaps - do they make pizza in Ethiopia - it was Italian once after all?

Anyway it's a majestic animal the lion, although actually it's the women who do most of the hard work. As always.
